Last June 22, 2009, the Web Science Group hosted the first independently organized TED event in the country, TEDxUP. The half-day event was attended by Web Science students and faculty, as well as several invited guests. More details about this event will be posted soon.
Last 04 to 09 May, 29 students from public high schools in Metro Manila, science high schools in the metropolis, and all the campuses of the Philippine Science High School network all converged at the University of the Philippines’s Department of Computer Science for the first Information and Communications Technology Camp.
Accompanied by four teachers, the students were divided into two groups depending on their previous experience with computing. One group took up Elementary Web page scripting and developed simple interactive Web sites powered with Javascript. The other group took a track with alternating courses in Competitive Programming Theory and Game Design and Development.
In addition to the two tracks, plenary sessions were held to expose the participants to the different activities the Department undertakes. A speaker from each of the Department’s six research laboratories shared about each of their group’s projects. Likewise, several other speakers were invited to discuss what Computer Science is and is not, what it takes to go into the field, and the opportunities that come with a career in computing.
The event was a subcamp of the 2009 Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Camp sponsored by Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute.
The Department of Computer Science faculty members and students will be presenting 9 out of 30 papers on March 2-3, 2009, at the 9th Philippine Computing Science Congress.
